The Story Behind Those Delicious Cookies
In 1980, traveling with the group Up With People, Maru of Mexico, and Ralf of Canada met and fell in love when they were both students. In the summer of 1981 Ralf came to Merida to visit Maru who was spending July and August at the beach with her family. Finding themselves with a lot of time on their hands, Maru decided to cook chocolate chip cookies one afternoon (Ralf's favorites!) to sell at the fair in Chelem.
The cookies were a big success, and from that day, Maru continued making cookies to sell to local bakeries, to pay for the long distance phone calls and visits to Canada.
After getting married, and living for a while in Europe, Canada and
Cancun,
Maru and Ralf came back to Merida to start their
family.
With more experience, and having worked at the best
bakeries in Vancouver, Maru decided to go back to
making cookies, but putting them together herself
into baskets, ready to give as gifts.
She began
cooking in her home, and made the first
line of
decorated Christmas cookies herself during the
Christmas of 1991. Not suprisingly, everyone loved
them!
With the help and advice of her friend Sheri Castellarin,
well known Canadian baking expert, Maru
developed a
line of products unique in all of southern Mexico, and in
1994, opened her doors and ovens
full of the aromas of cinnamon and chocolate on the second floor of the new
Gran Plaza. Now every day, you can see Maru in Kukis,
up to her elbows in flour and dough, preparing something
delicious for you to enjoy!
